Australian imaging center promises to deliver ‘innovation in biomedical imaging’

A new training center, developed by the Australian Research Council at the University of Queensland (UQ) and the Australian government, will train more than 20 scientists to work on innovations in biomedical imaging techniques.

The AUD $8.5 million ($6 million USD) center, dubbed the ARC Training Centre for Innovation in Biomedical Imaging Technology, will also investigate ways to improve the health of Australians with more accurate and cost-effective diagnostic imaging.

UQ Vice Chancellor and President Professor Peter Høj said the center will “deliver ground-breaking innovation in biomedical imaging and tackle key health problems.”

“It brings together industry and academic leaders to train a new generation of scientists who will help contribute to important advances in diagnostic methods and technologies,” Høj said in a prepared statement issued by UQ.

The researchers, led by Director Professor David Reutens, MD, will be based at the university’s Centre for Advanced Imaging.

“Our industry led research aims to deliver the right treatment for the right patient at the right time by improving the development and application of novel diagnostics, therapeutics and theranosticswhich combine the capabilities of diagnosis and therapy,” Reutens said. “These developments are important for the detection and treatment of diseases like cancer.”
