Bosses at Scotland-based NHS Highland have been accused of ignoring the area's radiologist shortage, as patients in need of emergency care are being transferred to other hospitals. The two remaining interventional radiologists recently left the hospital.
Former interventional radiologist Alastair Todd, MD, told the U.K.’s Press and Journal he was blocked by hospital executives from making a presentation to the board when the scale of the crisis became clear. He added that the concerns of physicians are addressed “at a superficial level” but no subsequent action is taken. Todd also believes patient care is being compromised due to the shortage.
“The bullying culture is a symptom of incompetence, of a dysfunctional organization which is not looking after the interests of patients or the interests of its staff,” Todd told the Press and Journal.
Board Medical Director Rod Harvey, MD, noted “many things” are being done to address the national shortage; however, because Highland is perceived as a remote area, it is hard to attract clinicians.
