Woman sues Illinois-based physicians for failing to diagnose terminal cancer

Michaleen Peterson is suing Illinois-based Northwestern Medicine Regional Medical Group in Chicago and physicians for allegedly failing to properly diagnose what would later be identified as terminal advanced-stage adenocarcinoma.

Peterson filed her complaint on Aug. 23 in Cook County Circuit Court, according to a report from the Cook County Record.

Specifically, she alleges the Northwestern Medicine Regional Medical Group, Daniel O’Malley, DO, and George Schuster, MD, did not notice a liver abnormality on her CT scan and also failed to follow a radiologist’s recommendation to order subsequent scans to check for masses on her liver abdomen and pelvis.

Peterson is seeking $50,000 in damages.

News of an incident is a stark reminder that healthcare workers and patients aren’t the only ones who need to be aware around MRI suites.
