Experts created new lung cancer screening pathways within CommUnityCare Health Centers—a large, diverse FQHC system in Central Texas.

DxEx, as the agency calls it for short, ensures that imaging and other tests are ordered, interpreted, communicated and acted upon appropriately. 

The software could opportunistically screen patients at a smaller cost than other interventions, given it automatically operates "in the background" on radiographs performed for other reasons. 

“These findings suggest that changing the genetic testing paradigm to population-based testing could prevent thousands of breast and ovarian cancers," experts wrote in JAMA. 

Previous studies have demonstrated that imaging overuse is pervasive in the ED, with “defensive medicine” a common reason, experts wrote in JAMA Network Open. 

Understanding about the profession remains low among patients and PCPs, with the latter essential to fueling procedure volumes, experts noted. 

Beginning September 10, breast imaging facilities will be required to notify patients about the density of their breasts, among other regulatory changes.
