UPDATED: Numerous studies have explored artificial intelligence's use in imaging, but researchers rarely take radiology’s complex work environment into account, experts noted.

Anecdotal reports indicate that radiologists are struggling to keep up with rising demand, but researchers sought to better quantify this crisis.

“It is our firm belief that such a classification does a disservice to patients," the American Society of Neuroradiology, Society for Interventional Radiology and others wrote recently. 

The study also unearthed a correlation between such changes and symptom-specific brain networks related to impaired cognition, sense of smell and fatigue. 

A nurse punctured the 68-year-old patient's lung with a feeding tube in 2018, and radiologist Louis Jacobs, MD, subsequently failed to spot the injury on X-ray. 

“Other treatments have failed to date. This injection is working,” said lead author Adam Zoga, MD, MBA, a professor of radiology at Jefferson Health.  

Collaboration between various support personnel and buy-in from all stakeholders are crucial to program success, experts wrote in JACR.
