AI software triples number of stroke patients who achieve functional independence

This week, health officials in the United Kingdom shared how an artificial intelligence-enabled platform has drastically improved stroke outcomes in the region. 

England’s National Health Service (NHS) deployed the software—Brainomix 360 Stroke—in every stroke center in England last summer. The software analyzes brain imaging for signs of tissue damage in patients who are suspected of having endured a stroke. It offers several different modules catered to specific imaging exams (CT w/o contrast, CT angiography, CT perfusion, MRI) and estimates the volume of irreversibly damaged tissue. This offers providers detailed insight into the best method of treatment and gives them a better understanding of a patient’s likelihood of recovery. 

Since Brainomix’s software was rolled out in England, it has been used in the diagnosis and treatment of over 60,000 patients. Now, new NHS data is highlighting how the software has improved patient care in the region. 

So far, its use has shortened the time to treatment for suspected stroke patients arriving at the hospital by 1 hour, down to 79 minutes from an average 140. This has led to a significant increase in the amount of patients achieving functional independence post-stroke; this figure has tripled—from 16% to 48%—since the program’s deployment. What’s more, stroke centers in England have seen a 50% increase in mechanical thrombectomy since last summer.

NHS Clinical Director for Stroke David Hargroves believes the technology is "revolutionizing how we help people who have been affected by stroke.”  

“It is estimated a patient loses around 2M brain cells a minute at the start of a stroke, which is why quick diagnosis and treatment is so critical,” Hargroves said in a news release. “AI decision support software provides real-time interpretation of patients’ brain scans—supporting expert doctors and other NHS staff to make faster treatment decisions.”
