FDA clears first-of-its-kind comprehensive AI triage solution from Aidoc
The healthcare industry’s first comprehensive artificial intelligence-enabled imaging triage tool was just cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Aidoc—an industry leader in clinical AI solutions—announced the expanded clearance of its Comprehensive Abdomen CT Triage tool on Wednesday. The solution combines 11 newly cleared indications and three previously cleared ones into a single workflow. Aidoc believes the solution will be a valuable tool for busy emergency departments where imaging backlogs slow workflows and prolong patient stays. It also has utility for routine outpatient settings as well.
The tool was designed specifically for abdominal CT imaging, which is routinely ordered in EDs to rule out a myriad of concerning conditions. It flags exams with suspicious findings, bringing them to the attention of radiologists for review. In the FDA-reviewed pivotal study, the 11 indications achieved a mean sensitivity of 97% and a mean specificity of 98%, proving its utility for flagging areas that warrant readers’ immediate attention.
"The ability to bring key acute conditions together into a single workflow is a fundamental shift in how radiology departments operate,” Heidi Beilis, MD, chief medical officer of diagnostics at WellSpan Health, said in a news release. “We’ve integrated numerous AI tools across our imaging operations, but this comprehensive triage solution can directly address core challenges in the field, including how we manage workflow, accelerating time to diagnosis for acute conditions and, ultimately, improving patient outcomes.”
“Health systems are increasingly looking to AI to improve access and tackle their most pressing priorities,” added Elad Walach, CEO and co-founder of Aidoc. “With CARE, we knew breadth alone wasn’t enough. We were committed to meeting the safety and quality threshold required for real-world clinical use."
The comprehensive offerings of the tool are owed to Aidoc’s self-developed AI foundational model, CARE. The company’s foundation-model approach allows it to deliver comprehensive clinical AI at scale. The tool is available through Aidoc aiOS, the company’s enterprise AI operating system, which also happens to be the most widely deployed clinical AI platform in healthcare with over 100 million patient cases analyzed to date.
It is expected that the entire CARE roadmap will be available for all CT and X-ray workflows some time over the next 18 months.
