RSNA research foundation approves nearly $5M in new grants
The Radiological Society of North America Research and Education Foundation Board of Trustees has approved over $4.5 million in new grants, the organization announced on Tuesday.
With support from donors, the foundation is funding 79 new grants this year, including the first-ever project in Argentina. Research topics span from earlier disease detection to high-impact training for the next generation of radiologists.
“The R&E Foundation continues to build on our mission of furthering the field of radiology through funding the researchers that advance science and patient care,” Pamela K. Woodard, MD, chair of the foundation board, said in a statement Aug. 18. “We are thrilled to announce our 2026 grant recipients, and excited to see what discoveries will be made and how their research will evolve the field.”
Among the recipients, Faezeh Sodagari, MD, of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, is exploring a new fast-MRI technique that can detect breast cancer in 5 minutes. In another study, Arman Sharbatdaran, MD, of Weill Cornell Medicine in New York, will research how whole-body MRI can be used to better understand the ways in which GLP-1 weight loss treatments impact long-term health.
For the Argentinian project, Hernan Chaves, MD, of Fleni Belgrano in Buenos Aires, will look to develop an open-source, AI-assisted simulator that can help to train radiologists.
“Projects like these are only made possible due to the generosity of our donors and the time and efforts of our volunteers,” Woodard added.
The RSNA research foundation has now awarded over $92 million in support to medical imaging investigators since its inception in 1984. Applications for the next round will open in October.
