Hospital system investing nearly $23M to expand interventional radiology services
A west-central Florida hospital system is making a big investment toward expanding its interventional radiology services.
Clearwater-based BayCare is spending about $22.5 million to help bring its disparate IR offerings under one roof. The eight-figure project is being undertaken at St. Anthony’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida, and is expected to wrap up by the first quarter of 2027.
About $10 million of the total will cover construction, with BayCare adding two new bi-plane suites. These specialized angiography rooms are equipped with dual rotating C-arms that capture high-res images from two angles.
“The addition of these suites will help to stabilize St. Anthony’s interventional radiology program, which has been in different locations around the campus,” hospital President Scott Smith said in a statement shared with Radiology Business. “With this project, we are able to bring all of the various parts of interventional radiology into one location.”
In addition, the project will include the construction of 12 pre- and post-procedure bays to improve capacity and radiology department workflows. St. Anthony’s also is creating dedicated wait spaces for interventional radiology and magnetic resonance imaging. The work is part of the hospital’s master facility plan that launched in 2016. In other related moves last year, St. Anthony’s also added two MRI suites with new scanners and a dedicated neuro intensive care unit.
“With this project, we are meeting the needs of our growing community,” Smith added, noting that the new IR suites will allow it to perform “more complex neurological and peripheral vascular cases.”
The Tampa Bay Business Journal first reported news of the expansion on March 25.
