Man critically injured after wearing metallic chain into MRI suite

A man in New York was critically injured this week after he entered an MRI suite while a scan was being performed.

The incident happened Wednesday afternoon at Nassau Open MRI, a freestanding MRI center in Westbury, New York. Local news reports on the accident indicate that a 61-year-old man entered an MRI suite while a scan was being performed on a patient. Information on why he was entering the suite has not yet been shared.

The man was said to be wearing a large metallic chain around his neck, which was attracted by the scanner’s magnetic field. The chain was pulled into the scanner, pulling the man with it.

Investigators have said this "resulted in a medical episode” of some sort, though no specific details have been released as of Thursday morning. A staff member called 911 for help and the man was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Reports suggest that is where he remains as of Thursday.

An investigation into the incident is now underway.
