Macrocyclics expands PET applications, serotonin-neurotransmission imaging
New copper-64 and gallium-68 chelating platforms are being developed by Macrocyclics, a subsidiary of AREVA Med, the company announced Jan. 10. Four new formulas would expand the company’s PET imaging portfolio.
The Dallas-based company is developing a 1,4,7-triazacyclononane-1,4,7-triacetic acid (NOTA) based chelating platform as well as a novel serotonin-based 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-1,4,7,10-tetraacetic acid (DOTA) chemical conjugate that could potentially be used to visualize serotonin-related neurotransmission with either radioisotope molecular imaging or contrast-enhanced MRI.
Serotonin is important for sleep rhythms, balanced moods and satiety and disordered serotonin could potentially be treated with serotonin-based pharmacology in patients affected by illnesses as varied as cancer, chronic pain, depression, schizophrenia, dementia and Parkinson’s disease, post-traumatic stress and drug addiction.
