Rad Partners commercializes teleradiology platform pioneered by acquired company vRad

Radiology Partners on Tuesday announced plans to commercially offer the teleradiology platform pioneered by acquired company vRad.

The product is a fully integrated, artificial intelligence-enabled tool, providing real-time analytics to radiology groups. VRad claims the platform can help optimize physician productivity, allowing practices to deliver “consistent, high-quality care” across multiple locations.

Radiologists and technology experts have worked to perfect the platform over the course of 20 years, with it now used by 688 radiologists reading 8.9 million studies annually. Along with offering the technology, vRad is the largest teleradiology services provider in the U.S., employing over 500 physicians.

“The vRad Platform isn’t just software—it’s the backbone of one of the most advanced radiology practices in the world,” Benjamin Strong, MD, chief medical officer of vRad, said in a Nov. 4 announcement. “We’re proud to offer it to the broader market and help more practices unlock efficiency, elevate radiologist satisfaction and deliver better care.”

VRad said its platform is ideal for practices seeking to unify disparate technologies and data, improve performance and boost radiologist satisfaction. The system integrates both reading and dictation, offering automated report generation, live clinical and technical support, and operational management. Embedded AI can aid in tasks including prioritizing pathologies, structuring reports and generating prior patient summaries.

Founded in 2001 and based in Minneapolis, Virtual Radiologic serves approximately 1,600 facilities and radiology groups across the U.S. and has issued 23 patents for its technologies. Meanwhile, Rad Partners (which recently announced plans to relocate its HQ to Nashville) is the largest radiology practice in the U.S., employing 4,000 physicians serving over 3,400 facilities. RP added vRad as part of its $885 million acquisition of Mednax’s imaging business in 2020.
