Los Angeles’ largest hospital names new imaging chair

Los Angeles’ largest hospital has named a new radiology chief.

Cedars-Sinai Medical Center on Friday announced the appointment of Marcel M. Maya, MD, as its next chair of imaging. A noted neuroradiologist and professor, Maya has served as co-chair of the department since 2011, leading “transformational” initiatives to improve patient care.

As chief of imaging, he will guide Cedars-Sinai’s clinical, research and educational programs, succeeding previous chair Barry Pressman, MD.

“Dr. Maya’s clinical leadership and commitment to quality care, physician education and interdisciplinary research will strengthen the care we provide to our patients,” Bryan Croft, executive VP and chief operating officer at Cedars-Sinai, said in a statement Oct. 30.

Maya also previously served as director of the hospital’s radiology residency program from 2003 to 2011. He currently practices as a neuroradiologist and neuro-interventionalist, integrated into Cedars-Sinai’s stroke, cerebrospinal fluid leak, spine and multiple sclerosis programs. With the title change, Maya will devote most of his time to leading the department while also providing clinical support to the same programs.

The radiologist has authored over 120 peer-reviewed applications, with a focus on CSF leaks and spontaneous intracranial hypotension. In clinical practice, Maya uses advanced imaging to diagnose conditions impacting the brain and spine, also delivering image-guided services to diagnose and treat strokes, CSF leaks and other conditions.

As chair, he plans to focus on ensuring safe and timely access to imaging, helping to support growing demand for radiologic care. Maya also hopes to strengthen hospital joint ventures and other partnerships to help deliver “leading-edge” healthcare services.

“I am honored to lead the Department of Imaging and to continue working alongside our outstanding physicians, technologists, nurses, staff and trainees,” Maya said in the announcement. “Together, we will build on the department’s strengths in patient care, education and research, while advancing innovation and improving access to imaging for the patients and communities we serve.”

Maya earned his medical degree from Istanbul University in Turkey and later completed a radiology residency and served as chief resident at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York. He completed a neuroradiology fellowship at NYU Medical Center and later a visiting fellowship in pediatric neuroradiology at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Maya also completed a residency in pathology early in his career at Istanbul University Cerrahpaşa Medical Faculty Hospital.
