The Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) posthumously honored Renan Uflacker, MD, earlier this week with its SIR Foundation Leaders in Innovation Award. The announcement was made at the organization’s Annual Scientific Meeting in Vancouver.

Uflacker worked at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston as a professor and director of the division of vascular and interventional radiology for 34 years.

“Dr. Uflacker's pioneering work helped transform interventional radiology into the cutting-edge medical field it is today,” Stephen T. Kee, MD, SIR Foundation board chair, said in a prepared statement. “His work—from the endovascular treatment of liver disease, to peripheral vascular disease, aneurysms and interventional oncology—provides a bedrock upon which new generations of interventional radiologists can learn from and further develop.”

Other awards were also handed out at the meeting.

Sarah White, MD, MS, associate professor of radiology at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, received the Dr. Gary J. Becker Young Investigator Award. In addition, Gordon McLennan, MD, professor of radiology and biomedical engineering and program directory of the Interventional Radiology Fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic, received the Frederick S. Keller, MD, Philanthropist of the Year Award.
