Woman dies following severe allergic reaction to CT contrast
A young lawyer has passed away after experiencing what is believed to be a severe allergic reaction to iodinated contrast media.
On Aug. 20, Leticia Paul, 22, of Lontras, Brazil, was undergoing imaging at Alto Vale Regional Hospital in Rio do Sul when the tragedy occurred. According to local news reports, Paul was completing a routine CT scan with contrast of her abdomen and pelvis for concerns related to prior kidney stones.
Reports indicate Paul suffered an anaphylactic reaction to the CT contrast during her exam. Despite efforts to stabilize her, Paul required intubation and was admitted to the hospital. The lawyer passed away less than 24 hours later.
Her aunt, Sandra Paul, told Brazilian news outlet g1 that her niece had previously undergone checkups due to her history of kidney stones. She did not disclose whether her niece had a prior history of contrast use or reactions.
"She was a vibrant girl, with a lot of personality,” Paul’s aunt told the outlet. "She loved law, she was so studious. She dreamed big, and I'm sure she would be a well-known name in the legal world."
Paul had recently graduated with a law degree and had plans to continue her education to in business and real estate law.
In the wake of Paul’s death, Alto Vale Regional Hospital released a statement extending its sympathy.
“We regret this loss and extend our heartfelt sympathies to the family,” the statement reads. "We reaffirm our commitment to ethics, transparency, and patient safety, emphasizing that all procedures are conducted in accordance with recommended clinical protocols.”
Specific information regarding the type of contrast media and dose has not yet been shared publicly.
