California private imaging practice joins Strategic Radiology

A California private practice is joining Strategic Radiology, a growing coalition of independent imaging groups, the two announced Monday.

Radiology Associates of San Luis Obispo is making the move, marking the 50th practice in the alliance, which now represents over 2,500 physicians. Serving California’s Central Coast since 1959, Radiology Associates employs 23 physicians, boasting broad subspecialty expertise and a longstanding focus on advanced technology and timely interpretation, SR noted.

This marks Strategic Radiology’s 50th member practice and third in California, joining the Hill Medical Corp., Pasadena, and Riverside (Calif.) Radiology Medical Group.

“Radiology Associates of San Luis Obispo represents exactly the type of practice that makes Strategic Radiology stronger,” Scott A. Bundy, MD, CEO of Strategic and a physician with member group Radiology Associates of North Texas, said in a statement Sept. 14. “They have built an enduring independent practice by combining outstanding clinical care with innovation, strong physician leadership, and a willingness to continually improve how radiology is delivered.”

Radiology Associates operates three outpatient imaging centers in the communities of Templeton, Pismo Beach and Santa Maria. Across its locations, the practice offers a broad range of imaging services including MRI, CT, PET, 3D mammography and ultrasound. The practice has undertaken significant steps to redesign its workflows, align physician resources with clinical demand and improve efficiency. Its efforts to strengthen private practice closely align with the coalition’s collaborative approach to addressing challenges facing the specialty, Strategic Radiology noted.

As a member, Radiology Associates will gain access to its network of peer collaboration, benchmarking, group purchasing, education, advocacy and other initiatives aimed at strengthening private practice.

“Joining Strategic Radiology gives our practice the opportunity to collaborate with other independent groups that understand both the opportunities and challenges of physician-owned radiology,” Timothy Auran, MD, CEO of Radiology Associates, said in the announcement. “We have always believed that independence requires us to continually innovate, adapt and learn. Through Strategic Radiology, we can share what we have learned while gaining new ideas and perspectives from practices across the country that share our commitment to delivering exceptional care and building a sustainable future for independent radiology.”

Strategic Radiology also previously reached the half-century member mark in March. Indianapolis-based Northwest Radiology has since been removed from its member list. The nearly 60-year-old practice in February sold its six imaging centers to RadNet Inc. for $9 million, with Strategic declining to comment on the deal at the time.
