Grand Traverse Radiologists joins Strategic Radiology’s growing private practice coalition
Grand Traverse Radiologists PC is joining Strategic Radiology, a growing coalition of private practices banding together to find efficiencies.
This marks SR’s third member in the Great Lakes State—joining Advanced Radiology Services in Grand Rapids and Huron Valley Radiology in Ann Arbor—and 42nd overall.
Founded in 1938 when Harry Weitz, MD, became the first radiologist to settle in the region, Grand Traverse now employs 24 physicians providing 24/7 interventional and diagnostic imaging services.
“Grand Traverse Radiologists is an exemplary radiology practice with a decades-long history of providing quality radiology services to the northern half of the lower peninsula of Michigan,” said Scott Bundy, MD, chair and CEO of Strategic Radiology and a practicing neuroradiologist with Radiology Associates of North Texas in Dallas-Fort Worth.
GTR serves Traverse City-based Munson Healthcare, northern Michigan’s largest health system with eight hospitals. Altogether, the hospital group covers nearly 15,000 square miles and serves 29 counties surrounding northeastern Lake Michigan. Many of the private practice’s physicians hail from the area, boasting strong ties to the community, Strategic Radiology noted.
Grand Traverse Radiologists also has an “extensive quality infrastructure,” and it was a key player in Munson Healthcare earning ACR accreditation across multiple imaging modalities and service lines. Leaders said they sought to join Strategic Radiology to collaborate with “like-minded” physicians in private practice.
“We are looking forward to sharing best practices and collaborating to continue to deliver superior service, diagnoses and treatment options throughout our region,” Michelle Lung, MD, president of GTR, said in the same announcement.
Practice member Leah Davis, DO, was elected to the Michigan State Medical Society Board of Directors last year to serve a three-year term. She represents independent, small physician groups for the organization. Davis also co-authored an opinion piece for Current Problems in Diagnostic Radiology in April, asking peers why they are not more concerned about private equity’s interest in imaging.
“We…need to be active in advocacy and make deliberate decisions when accepting job offers to avoid employment models that would ‘surrender control of [our] destiny’ and jeopardize the future of our profession,” Davis wrote April 1. “There is momentum for change at the federal and state levels, supported by active grassroots advocacy multispecialty physician groups and a few, but not nearly enough, state and national physician specialty groups. Now, we need radiologists and radiology physician groups like the ACR to join the effort and fight to preserve physician-owned and physician-controlled radiology groups.”
Jennifer K. Coleman, executive director of Grand Traverse Radiologists, also was named as part of the Radiology Business Management Association 2024 Class of Fellows in May. Most recently, Rhode Island Medical Imaging and its 90 radiologists joined SR in August.
