Strategic Radiology expands into Colorado, adding decades-old independent imaging group
Strategic Radiology is expanding into Colorado, with the practice coalition adding a decades-old independent imaging group, leaders announced Monday.
Colorado Springs Radiologists P.C. and its roughly 25 physicians are joining the organization as they seek to gain the benefits of scale without the challenges that come with consolidation. The practice has been serving southern Colorado for over 75 years, with its roots dating to World War II, according to Strategic Radiology.
CSR has long acted as the exclusive provider of interventional and diagnostic imaging services at Penrose–St. Francis Health Services, a three-hospital system also based in Colorado Springs, the state’s second largest city.
“We are committed to maintaining our independence while expanding access to shared resources and collaboration with like-minded groups across the country,” Timothy Cloonan, MD, president of CSR, said in a statement Sept. 15. “[Strategic Radiology’s] mission resonates deeply with our values, and we are excited to contribute to the coalition’s continued success.”
Colorado Springs Radiologists officially incorporated in 1971 but its history dates back decades before that with the work of pioneering physician James W. McMullen, MD. The doc led the Penrose Tumor Institute, which was established in 1939 as one of the country’s first radiation oncology centers. He also piloted the diagnostic radiology department at what would later become Penrose Hospital, Strategic Radiology noted.
In the late 1980s, CSR expanded further by forming PenRad Imaging, a joint venture with the hospital system. The organization has since grown into one of southern Colorado’s leading radiology providers, servicing six imaging center locations and supporting nearly 250 employees across the JV partnership. Penrose–St. Francis Health Services was previously a division of Centura Health until 2023. That’s when a joint venture between it and CommonSpirit Health was dissolved, resulting in the latter holding full ownership of the system. Along with Penrose, CSR also covers two other CommonSpirit hospitals—St. Francis Hospital and St. Francis Hospital–Interquest, both in Colorado Springs.
“Their success in navigating both hospital partnerships and outpatient innovation through PenRad Imaging exemplifies the kind of balance that many private practices aspire to,” Scott Bundy, MD, CEO and chairman of Strategic Radiology and a neuro specialist with Radiology Associates of North Texas, Fort Worth, said in a statement. “As our only member in the state of Colorado, their presence expands the coalition’s national footprint and adds a valuable voice from a highly competitive market.”
CSR also is currently hiring for three radiologists, according to a job posting with IndependentRadiology.com. Roles it’s seeking include an on-site, fellowship-trained rad; an on-site or remote night rad; and an on-site or remote swing rad, with the practice offering a signing bonus of up to $100,000, among other perks.
