Interventional radiologist 1st in world to deliver newly approved cancer treatment

Interventional radiologists with the Mount Sinai Health System recently became the first to successfully deliver a new form of radiation treatment for liver cancer.

TheraSphere Y-90 Any Day Dosing was cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma in March. The treatment involves the use of microspheres, which deliver radiation treatment to liver tumors directly through the bloodstream, sparing healthy tissue.

The TheraSphere 360 Management Platform enables providers to coordinate treatment planning, dose calculation, product ordering and case management all in one place, streamlining the scheduling process, saving time and paving the way for more patients to be seen. At the Mount Sinai Tisch Cancer Center in New York, where a significant number of liver cancer patients are treated, coordination is key to providing timely treatment. The combination of the new treatment and its corresponding management platform have the potential to improve workflows and increase the amount of patients that can be treated at the center.

On March 30, interventional radiologist Kirema Garcia-Reyes, MD, who also is an assistant professor of diagnostic, molecular and interventional radiology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, led the first procedure to utilize the new treatment and platform. Garcia-Reyes was assisted by Edward Kim, MD, director of interventional oncology, and Robert Lookstein, MD, professor of diagnostic, molecular and interventional radiology with the same organization.

The significance of the achievement was not lost on Garcia-Reyes.

“This is a significant milestone. With Any Day Dosing, we now have the ability to treat patients on more days of the week,” Garcia-Reyes said in a news release. “That can mean shorter wait times and more convenient scheduling during what is often a complex and time-sensitive treatment journey.”
