Society of Interventional Radiology names new president
The Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) announced several leadership changes on Tuesday during its annual meeting.
Saher S. Sabri, MD, the chief of interventional radiology at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C., will take on the title of society president for the 2026–2027 term.
Sabri, who also serves as a professor of radiology, previously held the roles of associate professor of radiology and surgery, vice chair of education, and residency program director for the department of radiology at the University of Virginia Medical School. He also holds the American Board of Radiology Certificate of Added Qualifications (CAQ) in vascular and interventional radiology.
The newly appointed president completed his radiology residency at the University of Iowa, following that up with a fellowship in vascular and interventional radiology from the University of Virginia. Sabri has held numerous leadership roles in educational, research and clinical settings as well.
“As I step into the role of president, I look forward to continuing strong advocacy for interventional radiologists and ensuring our members are recognized for the value they provide to the healthcare system and improving patient access to high-quality care,” Sabri said in a statement.
On Sabri’s provider biography page, the IR notes that his patient philosophy is: “No two patients are alike.”
He also emphasizes individualized treatment catered to patients’ specific needs.
“I spend as much time as possible with my patients in order to present them with options that are most relevant to their specific diagnosis and treatment goals,” Sabri said. “Providing patient-centered care means that I am available to my patients before, during and after the procedure.”
Sabri’s appointment was not the only leadership announcement made during this week’s conference. A full list of updated leadership roles can be found here. Sabri succeeds 2025-2026 President Robert Lookstein, MD, the chief of interventional radiology at Mount Sinai in New York.
